Orange Puff Pastry Swirl

This was a fun and quick dessert I made last night. Not many ingredients and can be made using any kind of Jam or Marmalade that you prefer. I was even thinking that you can make a pretty nice savory tart using garlic and parmesan and serving with dinner. And when you cut out your circles, save the excess for some nice breadsticks. I coated the counter with parmesan and Everything Bagel seasoning and rolled the excess into a rectangle and cut strips for the breadsticks. They went great with dinner!! You can see them in the checkered cup behind the chef with the parmesan spoon!

INGREDIENTS

2 sheets puff pastry circle shape, or cut into circle shapes, thawed

1 cup Orange Marmalade

1 egg

1 tablespoon water

Oil for greasing baking sheet

Powdered sugar for garnish

RECIPE:

Grease a piece of parchment paper the size of your baking sheet with oil so that the pastry doesn't stick to the paper. Lay down your first sheet of Puff Pastry and roll it out so it is nice and even and flat. Next, using a rounded object or a plate or pan, trace the biggest circle you can get in the center of the pastry. I just used a dinner plate that fit pretty well.

Using a knife, cut out the rest of the pastry to form your circle. Don't discard the outer pieces because you can make some good breadsticks with them.

Evenly spread the 1 cup of orange marmalade over pastry.

Then, cut another circle with the second piece of pastry and add that second layer over the top of the jammed piece. Place a cookie cutter or glass as a guide over the middle of the pastry and using pizza cutter or a knife cut dough into 16 evenly spread cuts. The best way to do this is to cut it in half, then cut each half in half again and again and again, until you get 16 strips.

Next, working on 2 dough strips at a time, twist each strip outwards then pinch the ends to connect 2 strips together, forming one part of the pie. Repeat with the rest of the strips.

Next, cover the dough with plastic food wrap and put it in the fridge to let it rise for about 30 minutes. While pastry is rising, preheat the oven to 425F.

In a mixing bowl, combine 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of water and brush egg wash evenly over the pastry. Bake for 20-22 minutes on the middle rack, or until golden color. If it looks like it is browning too fast, cover it with foil after 10 or 12 minutes.

Remove pastry from the oven and you can even sprinkle powdered sugar over the top. I planned to do that but I forgot. Sorry I didn't get a whole picture of it but I also forgot that too!! Enjoy!!

And here are the breadsticks I got with the excess dough. I just laid the excess on the counter which I had sprinkled with Parmesan Cheese and Everything Bagel seasoning. So when I rolled the dough out, the cheese and seasoning stick to the bottom. Nothing fancy but they were delicious. No complaints were heard.
